Commentary: Is SuperClsico a real rivalry?

Commentary: Is SuperClsico a real rivalry?
CARSON, Calif. C When talking about the SuperClsico, everyone says the right things. The tell you their matches against Chivas USA are rivalry games. They say they hate to lose to the guys they see in and around the Home Depot Center on a daily basis.
The Galaxy fans, too, talk about LA derby as a rivalry. They would like to see Chivas move as far away from “their” HDC as possible.
But where is this rivalry of which players and fans speak? For a rivalry to be a rivalry, don't both sides have to show up?
The 24th edition of the SuperClsico will take place on Sunday evening, when Chivas USA host the Galaxy (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2), and a quick glance at the previous 23 meetings shows just how one-sided the series has been.
Since the SuperClsico began in 2005, the Galaxy have built up an 11-3-6 record in regular-season meetings. Add the postseason and a US Open Cup match and the Galaxy's commanding series lead improves to 13-3-7.
Which means Chivas USA should be salivating each time they face LA. This is doubly true this weekend.
First, consider the way the Goats' 2009 season ended: a 3-2 aggregate loss to the Galaxy in the first round of the playoffs.
Second, Chivas need to win if they dont want to suffer elimination from postseason contention at the hands of the Galaxy.
And third, a victory by the hosts Chivas would most likely spoil the Galaxys bid for both the Supporters' Shield and the Western Conference title.
WATCH HIGHLIGHTS: LA, Chivas meet in first SuperClsico of 2010
But Chivas USA have always had some reason or another to motivate themselves for the game. And its almost always ended the same way: The Galaxy win and proclaim their dominance while Chivas' players scratch their heads and wonder what went wrong.
Sadly, heading into Sunday's SuperClsico, the second this season, the chasm between the clubs is wider than ever. The Galaxy stand on 50 points, atop the West, where they have been all season. Chivas have just 25 points and dwell in the conference cellar.
In 2005, the Galaxy finished the season on 45 points while their expansion brethren had just 18, and though the Galaxy finished out of the playoffs the next three seasons, the widest gap between the teams was 19 points in 2007the only season Chivas USA have claimed a season series victory over the Galaxy.
Worse, the Galaxy have gone three full years without losing to their so-called rivals. One key ingredient of derbies is the ability for both teams to score clutch wins over the other, and that has simply not happened here.
It's a shame, because Chivas-LA has the potential to be a great rivalry. The two clubs are among the few around the worldat least in prominent leagueswho share a stadium.
Flamengo-Fluminense in Brazil and AC -Inter in Italy are two other examples; over time, those clubs have birthed true derbies, underscored by important, dramatic victories by both sides.
That is the crux of the matter: Chivas USA need to put the Super in SuperClsico by winning a few more games and staking a claim to their presence at the Home Depot Center. Then, even the Galaxy players and fans will do more than just say the right things. They'll actually feel the right things, too. US Bid Committee confident ahead of FIFA vote

US Bid Committee confident ahead of FIFA vote
Last week, FIFA inspectors completed their visit to Qatar, the final stop on a globe-spanning tour of the nine bidders vying to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.
The Middle East nation's chances took a hit when Harold Mayne-Nicholls, head of the inspection team, said the bid presented “a number of logistical challenges,” but a surprise appearance by Zinedine Zidane impressed FIFA. The French legend passionately argued that it was time for a nation in the region to host the World Cup.
The oil-rich country and Australia are seen as the United States' primary competition to host the '22 tournament. Japan and South Korea are also in the running, while five European bids were submitted for both World Cups.
It's widely presumed that FIFA's executive committee will award the '18 event to a European host, eliminating them all from contention four years later.
David Downs, executive director of the US' efforts, continues to believe the US has a great shot to win one of the two votes held on Dec. 2.
“Our confidence level remains the same following the conclusion of our FIFA inspection visit, primarily because we expected our facilities (arguably one of our bid's strongest features) to be well-received, and indeed they were,” he told MLSsoccer.com via e-mail.
Downs and his staff kept tabs on the FIFA inspectors' world tour.
“Because we were the eighth of nine bidders to be visited by FIFA, we did pay close attention to reports of the earlier visits,” he wrote. “But we were not so much looking at the evaluations of each bidder's facilities but instead how certain aspects of their tours were handled from a logistics and protocol perspective.”
“We also asked FIFA for feedback on what to do and not to do, as well as appropriate timings for individual segments of our visit (e.g. Is 75 minutes enough time to visit an 80,000-seat match stadium?).”
With the visits complete, it's time to begin lobbying for votes. As the sole bidder from CONCACAF, the Americans already have an advantage as the federation pledged its three votes to the US effort. To win the World Cup bid, a country needs 13 of the 24 FIFA committee members to support its cause.
During FIFA's visit, Downs and the rest of the Red, White and Blue contingent learned they need to work at convincing voters how far the game has come in the US.
“One of their observations, although not really a formal part of their evaluation of our facilities, was that there is still a perception beyond our borders that the sport did not change greatly in the United States as a result of the 1994 World Cup, Downs said. As you know, nothing could be further from the truth.
“But clearly we have to do a better job explaining those things, and also how those enormous gains benefit the sport throughout the CONCACAF region and even the rest of the world,” he added. “We strongly believe a World Cup here in 2018 or 2022 would drive the global economy to even greater heights, but we must convince others of that.”
Although there are rumors that the Americans will drop out of the '18 running C fueled in part by a recent statement from England World Cup bid president David Dein that, “It won't be long before the United States will withdraw from 2018, leaving themselves a run on 2022″ C Downs says the US will continue pushing for both tournaments.
“That was merely David Dein's opinion and not reflective of any discussions we had with him,” Downs wrote.
Only 65 days remain until it all goes down. Related: WATCH: Go USA Bid Sign the Petition!

Hyndman: Cunningham back to 2009 self

Hyndman: Cunningham back to 2009 self
FRISCO, Texas Could the Jeff Cunningham who scored goals at a torrid pace to win the 2009 Budweiser Golden Boot be back?
The veteran scorer netted his 10th goal of 2010 in the 82nd minute of FC Dallas' 3-1 defeat of Kanas City last Saturday night.
Not only did the goal pad Dallas' lead, but also it put Cunningham at 131 career MLS goals, which is just one shy of tying Jaime Moreno for the most in league history.
WATCH: Cunningham vs. Moreno … The chase is on
More important to FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman, though, is that Cunningham is showing some of his best form of the season so far.
I just talked to Jeff and said this was the best game Ive seen you play since last year, Hyndman said on Monday. “For whatever reason the temperament, the lack of confidence or the playing time or just the uncomfortable feeling I dont think weve seen the best out of Jeff this year.”
Saturdays goal capped a big week for Cunningham.
He also scored a game-tying goal in stoppage time on Wednesday against New England that earned Dallas a tie to keep their unbeaten streak alive. FCD have not lost in 17 games.
That was the first time Ive seen the old Jeff, Hyndman said. When I say the old Jeff, I mean the player that I remember last year when he was at his best. He was quick, strong, had great vision, he was laying some great balls off and then he scores a goal. Hopefully that continues.
Exactly half of his goals in 2010 have come off the bench, which is a sharp departure from recent history for the striker. Three of his goals this year have been game-winners while two have been game-tying tallies that allowed his team to get a point.
WATCH: Cunningham scores game-tying goal vs. NE
Whether or not hes in the first XI in Saturday's home fixture against Chicago, Cunningham will likely see the field especially since in 31 career games against the Fire, he has 19 goals and nine assists.
FCD can clinch a playoff spot with a win over Chicago this weekend. They can also secure their postseason with a tie and help from New York, who play the Wizards on Saturday. Related: MLSsoccer.com Power Rankings: Wk. 26 Davies happy to return to FCD lineup

Busch: I have “no ill will” toward Fire

Busch: I have “no ill will” toward Fire
SAN JOSE, Calif. C Earthquakes Jon Busch laughed when asked, jokingly, if hes going to offer a $1,000 reward to the other members of San Joses starting XI if they record a victory over the Chicago Fire C Buschs former team C on Wednesday.
I dont have any money like that, Busch said.
Besides, to get his point across, Busch doesnt have to do anything more elaborate than to simply print out a copy of the MLS standings and slip them under the door of the Fires locker room to get the attention of Chicago technical director Frank Klopas and first-year coach Carlos de los Cobos.
With 39 points and six matches remaining, the Quakes are on the verge of their first playoff spot since being reborn in 2008. After dumping Busch just prior to the start of the season in favor of inexperienced Andrew Dykstra, who subsequently fumbled the job away, the Fire are in grave danger of missing the postseason for only the second time in their 13 seasons of existence.
Busch told MLSsoccer.com on Monday that he has no ill will toward his former teammates and fans. But he also didnt back down from his comments of two weeks ago, when took direct aim at Klopas and de los Cobos: At the end of the day, they know they made a mistake.
[inline_node:310844]Im old enough to know that the only thing that matters is the result, Busch said. It doesnt matter who its against. I think maybe when I was younger, especially the first time I went to Columbus, it was tough for me. But now, it just is what it is.
“Its just another game and for us. If we get our three points, were one step closer to the playoffs, and thats all were concerned about. Theres no old grudges.
Of course, Busch can afford to be magnanimous at this point; after all, hes wound up in position to start on a third consecutive playoff team. With Joe Cannon breaking his ankle just after taking the starting job back from Busch last month, the Quakes chances of making it to the postseason C and out of the first round C are going to depend on the 34-year-old Queens, N.Y., native.
Busch was in net as the Fire reached the Eastern Conference finals in each of the last two seasons. Chicago were ousted last year only after eventual champions Real Salt Lake pulled out a victory on penalty kicks.
Thats much more recent playoff experience than most of the Quakes have, but general manager John Doyle wasnt hoping for this outcome when he signed Busch in the first week of the season.
That wasnt the plan, Doyle said. The plan was to have cover for Joe and to push Joe C Joe was No. 1 at the time C and to have competition between the two.
“But then, always in the back of your mind, you say, What happens if one of the two goalies get injured? Whoevers backing up who, you want to have a guy whos been to the playoffs, who has the experience. For us, it wasnt something we could pass up.
Its paid off. In the six matches since Cannon underwent what could be season-ending surgery, Busch has allowed five goals and recorded a 4-1-1 record. All four victories have been by a lone goal, including 1-0 decisions against Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
WATCH: Busch talks to MLSsoccer.com after defeat of Union
The leadership he brings, its unbelievable, Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski said after Busch made five key stops against the Union. He makes saves and he doesnt give up rebounds.
“Jon had a couple of rockets at him that he held with guys on the doorstep. Any rebound, and thats a goal. Its something that gets overlooked sometimes. People just see the saves, and hes doing extra.

Union Dues: Philly find identity in biggest win

Union Dues: Philly find identity in biggest win
CHESTER, Pa. C Ive been waiting for a match like this all season. A match that I could sit back in the press box at PPL Park and watch the Philadelphia Union really take it to their opponents for an entire 90 minutes.
Suffering through periods of mistaken-laden and unfortunate results, the Union have scarcely played as well as they did in a massive 3-0 rout of Chivas USA last Saturday.
WATCH: FULL MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
From the first kick of the match to the referees final whistle, Peter Nowaks side kept the pressure on the struggling Goats and, through a newfound potency from set pieces, was able to put up its biggest winning result of the season.
So why havent Philly been able to play like this in their other 24 matches?
A lack of focus and the struggle to find an identity as a team certainly have been causes. But until now, when theres so little time left in their first year, the Union had not really made it a point to play as a unit and limit the opposing teams opportunities.
But they've suddenly only allowed three goals in their last five league matches, and the Unions defense and holding midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi took away any chances Chivas may have had. At the other end, Sebastien Le Toux was the tip of the attacking spear that drilled three goals, the first time the Union have won by that margin.
With the Colorado Rapids coming up on Wednesday, Philadelphia can take a lot from the win over Chivas USA. Playing determined, organized soccer at home hasnt always translated on the road, but this most recent victory is the biggest building block we have seen from the team to date.
Player of the Week: Sebastien Le Toux
The man behind two of the teams three goals against Chivas, Le Toux continues to play at the highest level. His contributions have been vital to the expansion squad in their first season in the league and keeping him around for the foreseeable future should be a top priority for the teams brass.
Little-Noticed Observation of the Week
Fred has been a solid player for the Union, but hasnt really contributed much as far as numbers go. Though hes had plenty of chances to add to his stats, the midfielder only has managed three goals and one assist so far. What he has added, however, is spark and determination, and that paid off on Saturday, when he was at the right place at the right time to give the Union a tally at the most vital of times C right before the half. It also served as the killer blow.
Nowak-ism of the Week
The team manager was his usual no-nonsense self after the match to address the media. Despite playing a pretty impressive match, the gaffer said there were areas of the match with which he wasnt pleased and stressed the need for his team to improve. Frankly, that is exactly how a manager in his position should react to a win like this, and his team has and will continue to benefit from that philosophy. Olsen, D.C. United change up their routine

Olsen, D.C. United change up their routine
WASHINGTON Ben Olsen has been D.C. Uniteds interim head coach for less than two months, but hes already learned a few tricks of the tradelike avoiding the media in the days after a tough loss.
Citing the suspension he incurred in Saturday nights 3-1 loss to Houston, Olsen took a rain check, so to speak, on answering questions after a rare Monday training session this week.
You cant blame him. Reporters on the United beat keep asking the same questions about why the team keeps making the same sorts of mistakes and why the same results keep unfolding. At this point, there are no new answers available.
WATCH: D.C. United 1, Houston Dynamo 3

But that doesnt mean the DC coaching staff isnt willing to try something new to break the vicious cycle. After deciding earlier this summer to give the team most Mondays off to aid in recovery times, this week players who did not start against Houston went through with a lively workout highlighted by half-field 6-vs.-6 games with full-sized goals.
Were just trying to do something a little different, see if we can switch something up, explained technical director and interim assistant Chad Ashton. Weve been doing the same thing for a while so sometimes change is a good thing, just to feel like youre changing up the week.
The weekends setback was Uniteds 18th of this league campaign. While the pain of losing has not lost its sting, the risk of complacency remains significant.
The hardest thing iswith how games are going, how the season is goingto try and keep guys fresh mentally, added Ashton. This stuff starts to wear on you. It starts to beat you up emotionally and to have a fresh outlook going into every weekend can be a challenge. As a coaching staff thats now what we have to do.
Four games remain in Uniteds season, with a trip to Colorado coming up next. United have not won on the Front Range in more than a decade and Ashton will likely have to lead the team because Olsen, under an automatic suspension for last Saturdays bizarre ejection alongside Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear, cannot sit on the bench for the clash with the Rapids.
It was ridiculous, for both coaches, said Ashton. Its just a weird situation. Related: MLS Thermometer: DC still struggling Who will win the Golden Boot?

Socio MLS comes to Houston, LA

Socio MLS comes to Houston, LA
Socio MLS continues to be a big draw for youth league teams nationwide. Nearly 300 teams of Houstons La Unidad League and L.A.s Super League have registered.
Socio MLS has worked hand-in-hand with local MLS Clubs along with Degree Men, Castrol, and to provide the leagues with their most fundamental needs: , , certification programs for league coaches and referees, and MLS player development opportunities through Socio MLS Youth Scouting Days.
The Socio MLS and Degree Men two-day event in Houston celebrated La Unidads involvement with the program. The celebration, complete with a parade, also marked the kick-off of the leagues new season.
Peiser Park in H-Town played host to the event. Local police, members of the fire department and representatives of Major League Soccers Houston Dynamo came out for the weekend, along with some of the Dynamo Girls, who signed autographs and posed for photos with fans.
Our goal is to educate our young players that, through these kinds of programs, it will be possible for them to pursue a professional soccer career and will also help them become an asset to the community, Cuellar noted as he oversaw registration by more than 110 teams.
Its heartening to see everyone involved in our league taking this event very seriously and taking the time to understand the benefits of Socio MLS.
Antonio Montoya, a native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, coaches his three sons in La Unidads league, and was particularly happy about the opportunities that Socio MLS was providing his children.
My sons all dream of one day earning a scholarship through soccer and maybe one day having a career in this beautiful sport, Montoya said.
Although my youngest son, who is a , looks to be more serious about reaching this goal, the coach admitted. With Socio MLS, I think hes more motivated.
Socio MLS also helps provide one of the most vital elements of the game: referees. Thanks to Refugio Ref CuCu Placencia, who refereed for four seasons in Mexicos professional leagues, aspiring officials in Houston receive top of the line training from experienced teachers.
Ref CuCu praised Socio MLS for reaching out to La Unidad referees in an effort to continue the instructional programs he offered the league.
We need more referees, which is the reason I offer the La Unidad instructional programs every week for those who are interested in broadening their knowledge of the sport. Now with Socio MLS, this will become an official part of the league Placencia said.
Id like to thank the organizers of this event for this wonderful and beneficial program that everyone involved in the league can take advantage of.
LAs Super Soccer League also held a two-day event at Veterans Park, a two-year-old all synthetic turf complex in Pomona. Over 178 Super Soccer League teams had the opportunity to register for Socio MLS. Local MLS clubs Chivas USA and were on hand as well and sponsored a raffle wheel and giveaways.
Ricardo Carrillos family has been involved with the league since his father founded it in 1995. Carrillo took over his fathers position of league president three years ago, but he has already seen the impact that Socio MLS has made.
The teams loved it, Carrillo said. Its the first time the league has become involved with such a program. Its something new to all of our coaches, players and referees and at the end of the day they left with smiles on their faces because it makes them feel important, aside from the fact that it made our league look really good.
But the scouting opportunities that Socio MLS are offering have the potential to make the league look even better if the next big MLS star happens to come out of Pomona.
Just the fact that MLS is showing interest in our league is important to us and to the Hispanic community. We are looking forward to the scouting events because there is a lot of soccer and a lot of talent in Pomona so we are pleased with the opportunities that Socio MLS has already provided and will continue providing for Super Soccer League.
